Rhythm Detectives: What Is the Difference Between Beat and Rhythm?

Have you ever tapped your foot while listening to music? If so, you've already found the beat!
Welcome, Rhythm Detectives! Today we're going to solve one of music's biggest mysteries: the difference between beat and rhythm.
The Beat: Music's Steady Heartbeat
The beat is the steady pulse that keeps music moving. Think of it like a heartbeat or the sound of footsteps when you walk.
Try this:
Tap your hand on your knee at a steady pace.
Tap... Tap... Tap... Tap...
Great job! That's the beat.
The beat stays steady throughout a song, helping musicians play together and helping listeners feel the music.
The Rhythm: The Pattern of Sounds
Rhythm is different from the beat.
Rhythm is the pattern of long and short sounds we hear in music.
Imagine these two examples:
Beat -Tap... Tap... Tap... Tap...
Rhythm - Clap Clap Pause Clap
The beat stays steady, but the rhythm changes and creates interesting patterns.
